State reopens schools in Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi

Government said it is assured of safety of learners in schools.

The government has directed that all day primary and secondary schools in Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi counties be reopened on Thursday.

A joint statement by Cabinet Secretaries Kithure Kindiki (Interior) and Ezekiel Machogu (Education) said the government has taken measures to ensure that learners are safe. 

"On the basis of the evaluation, it is hereby directed that all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu counties re-open for normal school activities on 20th July, 2023," the statement reads.

It said the government had evaluated the security situation in the counties and other parts of the country and established the relevant security agencies to ensure safety at schools. 

On Tuesday, the government announced the closure of all day primary and secondary schools in the aforementioned counties citing security threats. 

It said intelligence gathered showed that the lives of the students could be at risk.

"The government has received credible security intelligence that criminal elements planning to unleash terror and violence on the public tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes with security agencies around certain schools within Nairobi and Mombasa cities," Tuesday's statement read.

Schools obeyed the directive. An earlier spot check by the Star showed closed gates in several schools including Moi Avenue Primary School in Nairobi.
