Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino has said that Kenyans are to blame for the chaos witnessed during the ongoing anti-government protests.

On Wednesday, Owino said that the Kenyan's conduct during protests is what lands them in trouble.

He argued that citizens are "uncivilized" in their demonstrations and that is why security forces are occasionally forced to use a lot of force to restrain them.

“The deaths occurred because we are not civil, the community is not civil. We are not properly educated on the law…we are not obedient; if we were obedient or civil, we would not have gotten into a confrontation with the police in the first place," Owino said during an interview on JKL.

The ex-police boss told off people criticizing police for their actions during protests to ensure there is law and order.

Owino explained that security teams are just like any other persons and thus they have a right to protect themselves, depending on the situation.

“There is a lot of prejudice against the police and yet you cannot sleep in your house without the police presence. Police officers will always act on their own without having time to refer to their books or superiors,” he added.

At least six people were shot dead and 30 others injured in separate places in the anti-government protests in the country on Wednesday.

Also, more than 300 people were arrested across the country, as the demos enter the second day.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said cases of lawlessness happened in parts of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya and Nakuru.

He said those arrested will be charged with crimes including looting, malicious damage of property, arson, robbery with violence and assaulting law enforcement officers.
