ICT CS Eliud Owalo has assured that all government systems are safe following an attempt to hack the e-Citizen platform.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Owalo said the government agencies were on high alert in case of another hacking attempt.

He added that they have enhanced the security of the e-Citizen portal and all government service sites.

"All systems and portals under the control of the government of Kenya are safe," he said.

Owalo urged the public to heighten their cyber surveillance efforts, noting that the government is doing the same and jointly, the country's cyberspace will remain secure.

He said there was an attempted hack on the state services portal characterised by unsuccessful attempts to overload the system through unusual requests.

He added that this happened over the past week but the technical team blocked the source IP address.

"For clarity, both the privacy and security of data were not compromised. The system was not hacked," he said.

This however resulted in slowness in accessing of e-Citizen services caused by intermittent interruptions.

Owalo said they will revert to optimal utilisation levels in a short while.

"We want to assure Kenyans that the government has put in place remedial measures to address the current challenge plus a long-term risk mitigation framework to ensure sustainable data privacy and data security," he affirmed.

The CS urged the public to report all cyber security incidents to The National Kenya Computer Incident Response Coordination Centre.
