President William Ruto has promised Mombasa youths 5,000 job opportunities under the affordable housing project.

He made the promise on Saturday when he opened the launch of the Toyota Fortuner local assembly line in Miritini.

Ruto said the government is planning to start construction of 2,000 houses in Mombasa's Jomvu area before December this year.

"Na mimi nahitaji vijana kama elfu tano watakaofanya hiyo kazi. Muanze kujipanga, pale kuna nafasi za ajira," he said.

The President said the housing project will make use of skilled plumbers, electricians, engineers, architects, masons, carpenters and even cashiers.

Ruto called on the youth not to discriminate against any job provided it puts money in their pockets.

"Si tulisema kazi ni kazi? Ukipata ya kukaza bolts si unafaya? Ukipata ya electrician unafanya," he said.

The Head of State further said there are plans to establish ICT hubs in every ward in Mombasa to facilitate and enable the youth to work abroad remotely.

"Tunataka mtu wa Jomvu akiwa ward yake anaweza kufanya kazi Marekani na anaweza kulipwa na dollar akiwa Jomvu," he said.

Ruto said the hubs will benefit from 100,000 fibre optic cables that the government is working on deploying to leverage technology and create additional job opportunities for the youth.

The President further revealed that the government will open a new railway station in Jomvu to ease travelling for residents as they go about their daily chores and businesses.
