Ruto's week in coast region, gives Bi-partisan talks second shot

He toured five coastal counties to inspect and commission projects.

President William Ruto spent most of his time at the coast this week and as usual, he came bearing goodies.

His itinerary from July 27 included covering Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River counties.

The President's focus was on inaugurating, commissioning, and inspecting government projects that are in line with the bottom-up economic agenda.

Monday

On Monday the President had a quiet diary with no major events.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, Ruto visited Roam Park, an electric motorcycle assembly plant in Nairobi's Industrial Area where he pledged to support the acquisition of electric motorcycles in the country to a high of 200,000 pieces by the end of 2024.

The President also said the government will offer incentives through tax exemptions to support the venture and boost e-mobility in the country.

He announced that the government has removed five different taxes in the electric motorcycle manufacturing sector. 

“We shall remove the 16 VAT on the electric motorcycles, this means the cost of the electric motorcycles will drop by 16 per cent,” Ruto said.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, President Ruto was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the Africa heads of State summit on human capital.

In this forum, he commended Tanzania for its housing projects and didn't hesitate to share his affordable housing plan. 

On the sidelines, the Head of State met with Tanzania President Samia Suluhu,  amid claims that Ruto snubbed her while she was in Kenya for two days, two weeks ago.

Opposition chief Raila Odinga claimed that President Suluhu was in Kenya two weeks ago to mediate talks between him and Ruto. 

However, Raila claimed that Suluhu was left hanging for the two days she was in the country, and no mediation talks took place.

However, House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed denied the claims, insinuating there was no official invitation to Suluhu.

He intimated that the Tanzanian President could have been in Kenya on holiday if the claims are true.

Thursday

On Thursday, Ruto started his five-day tour in the coastal region.

 A tough-talking President in Lamu vowed that he will end the current wave of protests by the opposition just as he 'stopped the BBI reggae'.

Ruto said the government will not allow the destruction of properties by protesters.

“The same way we prayed and God stopped reggae, is the same way maandamano will stop. We will not allow the destruction of properties,” Ruto said.

The President also affirmed that Kenya's security was not negotiable.

Ruto said destroying Kenya through demos will not happen again under his watch.

"There are those who want to destroy Kenya, kill Kenyans and I will not allow that, it is not negotiable," he said.

Friday

On Friday, President Ruto announced that the Kenyan government has joined the list of states opposing the military coup in Niger.

He termed the happenings 'an unconstitutional change of government' and called for the release of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who has allegedly been held captive following the Wednesday coup.

The Head of State further told the opposition that they owed Kenyans an apology over recent protests that led to deaths and injuries.

While speaking during the opening of the Kichwa Cha Kati Fish Market in Malindi, Ruto said the opposition should be ashamed of the damage caused during demonstrations.

"It is dishonest for the opposition to pretend to be concerned about the well-being of the people yet they led demonstrations that led to loss of lives and destruction of property. They should be ashamed of themselves," he said.

Saturday

On Saturday, it was revealed that former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo will mediate talks between Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party and the Kenya Kwanza leadership to allow dialogue following anti-government protests.

Obasanjo had earlier met President Ruto at State House.

President Ruto presided over the rededication of KNS Shupavu, a Kenya Navy vessel.

He also launched the Toyota Fortuner local assembly line at Associated Vehicle Assembler.

Ruto also commissioned of Kenya National Shipping Line Shupavu at Mombasa Kenya Shipyard Limited.

Sunday

On Sunday, the President will attend a Church Service, Ukunda, Kwale County.
