A lady from Somalia has gone viral on social media for emerging as the slowest-ever 100-metre runner has explained her situation.

Nasra Abubakar Ali competed in the 100m sprint at the World University Games in China.

In a video that made rounds on social media, she is seen starting off in a slow manner, and by the look of things, she appeared unfit.

The athlete is soon left out of the shot but eventually completes the race.

She completed the race in 21.81 seconds - more than 10 seconds behind the eventual winner.

Many of those who shared the video made fun of her even as some, seemingly in jest, suggested she should apologise to the Somali government.

Somalia Sports Minister Mohamed Barre Mohamud described the incident as an embarrassment.

"What happened today was not a representation of the Somali people... we apologise to the Somali people," he said.

However, Nasra has defended herself saying she had an injury.

"Somalis do not deserve to be represented in a running competition, I ran with a sprained leg, but I am criticized," she said in a post on her social media pages.

In a press release posted to its Facebook page, the Association of Somali Universities said it had not appointed any athlete to compete in the event.

The Somali Athletics Federation has reportedly agreed to launch an investigation into how Abubakar Ali was selected.
