Two people have died following a road accident in Athi River, Machakos County.

The duo, a bodaboda rider, and his pillion passenger died after the motorbike he was riding was involved in a head-on collision with a school bus at Ngei 2 Estate within Mavoko division on Monday.

Athi River South Subcounty police Commander Jos Mudavadi said the duo succumbed at Shalom Community Hospital, Athi River branch where they had been rushed following the incident.

The matter was reported to the Athi River police station as a fatal road traffic accident report.

“It occurred today on August 7, 2023, at 7.40 am along Athi River EPZ road at Ngei 2 estate junction,” Mudavadi told the Star by phone hours after the incident on Monday.

Mudavadi said the accident was reported to the station at around 8.10 am.

“It happened that the driver was driving the school bus belonging to a local private primary school which was headed towards the said school from Athi River direction, but on reaching at the said location while he was turning to his right-hand side to join a feeder road, he collided with a motorcycle which was overtaking from behind and ran over it,” Mudavadi said.

He said as a result, the 28 – year – old cyclist and his 34 – year – old female pillion passenger succumbed to serious head injuries on arrival at Shalom Hospital where they had been rushed by well-wishers for treatment.

The police boss said the motor vehicle was damaged on the driver’s door while the motorcycle was extensively damaged.

“The bodies have been moved to the same private facility’s mortuary awaiting postmortem,” Mudavadi said.

He said both the school bus and motorcycle wreckage had been towed to the Athi River police station awaiting inspection.

Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the incident.
