Wavinya Ndeti lauds county emergency team over response to Mombasa road accidents

The governor said they are still on standby to mobilise and deploy more resources should the need arise.

Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has the Machakos emergency team over their response to multiple accidents along Mombasa Road.

She said the Machakos County Emergency Control Centre received a call about a road traffic accident near Mto wa Mawe on Saturday evening and the officials immediately swung into action.

In a statement on Sunday, Wavinya said the officers contained the incident, where an oil tanker had overturned causing an oil spill.

"An oil tanker reportedly lost control and overturned on the road causing a massive oil spill at the scene. We immediately activated the nearby emergency response teams Kyumvi Highway ambulance and the Mavoko fire engine," she said.

The Machakos governor said two other accidents also occurred on the same day, on the same road and the emergency response was swift.

She said police officers were able to rescue 32 survivors who were rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital.

"My officers also take note of two other accidents that occurred near the Kyumvi Junction in the Nairobi general direction, specifically one involving a minibus and a lorry at the Kyumvi junction on the way to Nairobi and the other still on the highway," she said.

Wavinya said that health personnel reported that majority of the survivors suffered soft tissue injuries.

She said five of the victims require X-ray, debridement, or stitching noting that no fatalities have been recorded.

"I assure the people of Machakos and the families of those affected by these accidents that we will do everything in our power to ensure that the injured receive the best care possible," she said.
