National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has congratulated the Spanish women's football team for winning the World Cup trophy.

Spain beat England 1-0 on Sunday to win their first-ever World Cup trophy at an entertaining final played at the Australia Stadium in Sydney.

"Hongera Spain team for clinching the Fifa World Cup. You have proved that a woman can do better than a man can," Wetang'ula said in a statement.

He took the opportunity to call for proper investment in women's football in Kenya to enable the country to scale similar heights in the future.

"Here at home let us invest in women's football and make our dream of playing in the World Cup come true," he said.

Spain's win at the tournament came in the 29th minute of the game after captain Olga Carmona latched onto a loose ball on the left side of the pitch and slotted a low shot past the keeper to the far right corner.

The new world champions had a chance to solidify their dominance in the 69th minute but the English custodian Mary Earps stopped Jenni Hermoso's penalty.

The penalty was called after a VAR review found Keira Walsh at fault for a handball violation.

Despite the loss, England, whose nervousness and frustration were evident most of the game, made history by reaching their first-ever Women's World Cup final.

Sweden defeated co-hosts Australia 2-0 in Brisbane on Saturday, August 19 to take third place at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.
