I'm grateful for your energetic role in protests, Raila tells Migori

Migori was one of the epicenters of the mass protests called by Raila in July.

Opposition Chief Raila Odinga on Friday expressed gratitude to Migori County for the role they played during the anti-government protests.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Raila said he had a discussion with leaders from the region.

"Fantastic discussion at Migori Leaders' Forum! Grateful for this county's energetic role in maandamano," he said.

Migori was one of the epicenters of the mass anti-government civil disobedience where residents actively participated in the maandamano in July.

Two people sustained gunshot wounds in the county while five others were injured after being clobbered by anti-riot police on July 19, 2023 during the protests.

Raila had called for three days of mass demonstrations from July 19-21 to pile pressure on the Kenya Kwanza government to among other things lower the cost of living and implement electoral justice. 

A woman was among those injured in Migori after police allegedly lobbed teargas into her house as she was preparing breakfast for her family.

The demonstrators forced shops and schools to be closed in parts of the country with Migori town among those that were mostly affected.

Other counties where heavy protests were witnessed were Kisii, Nyamira, Kisumu, Nairobi , Nakuru, Machakos, Murang'a Mombasa and Kilifi.
