Ruto appoints Vimal Shah new Maasai Mara varsity chancellor

The Bidco boss will serve in the position for five years effective September 7.

President William Ruto has appointed Vimal Shah as the new Chancellor of the Maasai Mara University.

The appointment was announced in a gazette notice released on Friday.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Vimal Shah to be the Chancellor of the Maasai Mara University," reads the notice.

Shah will be in office for a period of five years, with effect from September 7, 2023.  Shah is the chairman of Bidco Africa.

Prof Peninah Aloo-Obudho, the university's Vice Chancellor, has been acting chancellor.

In August 2023, the Public Service Commission (PSC) announced seven job vacancies for a vice chancellor in four public universities, including Maasai Mara.

According to the University Act, 2012, chancellors are mandated to confer degrees and grant diplomas, certificates and other awards at a university.

"The chancellor shall be the titular head of the university and shall in the name of the university confer degrees and grant diplomas,” the law reads in part.
