The government on Thursday announced that the passport backlog at Nyayo House will be cleared within 10 days.

The announcement was made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki who made an impromptu visit to Nyayo House.

“I want to assure you that the backlog will not be there in the next 10 days to 11 days. We will have cleared it and it will never accumulate again," he said

Last week, the CS said the passport backlog stood at 58,000, with the Department of Immigration and Citizen Services processing approximately 5,000 passports daily.

Kindiki revealed that the ministry had made arrangements for more equipment but it is yet to arrive.

"As you are aware we must use the government procedures of procurement and so our hands are tied to how fast we can do some things," he said.

However, the CS assured Kenyans that all cases of delay would be cleared within the said period.

Kindiki who visited Nyayo House in the afternoon interacted with Kenyans who had come to the offices to process their travel documents.

The Kenyans got a chance to talk to the CS who was on a fact-finding mission to see how things were running since his previous visit.

This makes it his third impromptu visit to Nyayo House in less than a month.

In a similar visit last week Thursday, Kindiki made rounds at Nyayo House and interacted with Kenyans who were there for passport applications and other government services.
