Naekana Sacco management said Friday they prioritise the safety of their customers, terming as unfortunate the accident that claimed 9 people in Salama on Thursday night.

Paul Matampash, the Sacco chairman, said their vehicle was involved in a grisly accident in the Salama area of Makueni is theirs.

“Last night, a few minutes to midnight, one of our shuttles, KCY 382W, while travelling from Loitikitok to Nairobi was involved in a fatal head-on collision with a trailer at Salama area along Kiima Kiu,” said Matampash.

Matampash said they established through Salama police records that their vehicle was in the rightful lane when the driver of the trailer lost control and rammed into their passenger vehicle.

The chairman thanked the Salama-based police emergency response team and the public for responding on time in rushing the injured to the Kilungu sub-county hospital.

“Sadly, we lost five people on the spot and four others succumbed to injuries while receiving care at the hospital,” said Matampash.

“We wish the injured a quick recovery and send our sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones,” added Matampash.

He called upon their customer fraternity to remember the hospitalised individuals and the families of the deceased in prayers.

Matampash, on behalf of the Sacco, urged all road users to care about others to keep the roads clear of accidents.

“Once again, we wish a quick recovery to the injured and may the souls of our departed friends rest in peace,” said Matampash.

The news of the accident on Thursday night spread like a bushfire in Loitokitok town as relatives of those who travelled to Nairobi in the ill-fated vehicle wanted to know the fate of their kin.
