Former Kajiado North MP Philip Odupoy is dead

The late former MP served the constituency between 1983 and 1988.

Former Kajiado North MP Philip Lempish Odupoy is dead.

Governor Joseph Lenku announced the news on Sunday, saying that he learned about his death late on Saturday. 

“It is with great sorrow that I have learned of the passing on of Hon. Odupoy, who served as Kajiado North MP between 1983 and 1988,” said Lenku in a statement.

The Governor noted that Odupoy 's leadership and service to his people came naturally to him. 

“Odupoy also served as an Assistant Minister of Planning and National Development during former President Daniel Arap Moi's administration,” Lenku added.

He eulogised Odupoy as a public servant, a successful farmer and eminent leader of repute and influence

“At this time of deep sorrow for his family and friends, we commit our solidarity now and always, for this grief is shared,” Lenku added.

Kajiado North Constituency was created before the 1966 general election and in that year, G K Ole Kipury of KANU was elected MP.

Four years later, the late John Keen was elected in 1969 and served until 1982, and in the following elections in 1983, Odupoy was elected and served until 1988.

The late George Saitoti took over as MP from 1988 until 2012 when he was in a helicopter accident in Ngong and died.

After Saitoti’s demise, Moses Sakuda was elected in a by-election.

In the 2013 general election, Joseph Manje was elected MP after Sakuda moved to Kajiado West where he was elected too.

Manje served as Kajiado North MP until the last general election, when he quit to be Dr David Nkedianye’s running mate in a gubernatorial election which they lost to Lenku.

Manje was replaced by Onesmus Ngogoyo, who was elected on a UDA party ticket.
