KRA to destroy posh unclaimed vehicles in 30 days

The Kenya Revenue Authority has issued a 30-day notice to owners of imported goods yet to be collected from their border customs offices failure to which they will be disposed of. 

In a gazette notice, the Customs and Border Control Department said the goods to be destroyed upon lapse of the notice period include high-end motor vehicles of different makes at the Inland Container Depot, Nairobi.

"Pursuant to the provisions of sections 42 and 248 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004, notice is given that the under-mentioned goods which have been condemned shall within thirty (30) days of this notice be treated as abandoned and will be disposed of by destruction or otherwise disposed of in such manner as Commissioner may direct."

Among the vehicles are a Volvo S40,20d, Audi Yd57 Mve, Bmw 3201, Toyota Camry and Toyota Levin, Mercedes Benz makes C240, S320 and C180, Volvo 480es, Grand Vitara, Toyota Landcruiser and Range Rover 110.

Others are Mitsubishi Lancer Glx, Honda Civic, Nissan Caravan, Nissan X Trail, Harrier, Subaru Forester, Peugeot 305, 405 and 406 and a collection of motorbikes.

Also lined up for destruction are consignments of foodstuff like peanut butter, spices, beer, galvanized steel, second-hand clothes, packages of relief goods, cartons of tobacco, diapers, gaming machines, face masks and used tyres.

Individuals who imported sanitary towels, body lotions, toothbrushes, door locks, mosquito coils and an assortment of other household goods including bulbs and extension cables have also been notified to collect them within the grace period.

In May, the Customs department destroyed an assortment of imported uncollected goods including adult toys and artificial male organs at their warehouses in Eldoret, Nakuru, Lodwar, Lokichoggio and Suam.

The goods were destroyed on May 22 upon the lapse of a 30-day ultimatum for owners to collect the said goods via a gazette notice dated  April 20, 2023.

The taxman also destroyed a variety of alcoholic drinks, shisha products, bulbs, bed sheets, plant seeds, bags of sugar, crates of beer and powdered milk that were lying at the Eldoret and Lodwar customs warehouses.

The adult toys alongside used inner garments, military uniforms and toy guns were being held at the Nakuru warehouse.
