Police recover 3,800 bottles of counterfeit drinks worth Sh7.8m in Kiambu

Detectives have launched a manhunt for the suspect who is still at large.

Police have recovered 3,800 bottles of counterfeit drinks and 24,000 pieces of counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority stamps in Kiambu.

DCI said during the operation, 260 litres of Ethanol, sacks of assorted bottle caps and 3,440 pieces of empty bottles were also recovered from a house.

The DCI said the value of the illicit recoveries is estimated at Sh7,836,500 with a VAT loss of Sh1,253,840 and exercise duty loss of Sh2,774,551.49.

The recovery followed an operation conducted by a multi-agency team comprising officers from DCI Headquarters- Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and KRA.

Police said the recovered items were escorted to a KRA warehouse.

This comes barely days after detectives recovered 4,920 pieces of 250ml bottles of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in a raid at a store along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi.

They were assisted by KRA in the operation following the ongoing crackdown on high-level tax evasion by liquor dealers

The recovery which comprises mixed brands of illicit liquor with an estimated value of Sh984,000 was escorted to a KRA warehouse, and a seizure notice was issued to the suspect.

"As the crackdown christened Operation Uchumi heightens, further investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the counterfeit drinks."
