At least four people were killed Friday and two others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Garissa.

The victims were using a four-wheel drive car between Egge Dam and Bogyar along Dadaab-Garissa when the incident happened, police said.

The vehicle was badly damaged.

The injured were evacuated and rushed to a local hospital in serious condition, police said.

The driver had about 10 health officials who were conducting the Garissa County TB exercise when the incident happened.

This is the latest incident after a lull of almost a month because of rains that cut off roads there.

Police have intensified operations in the area to address the terror menace thwarting dozens of planned attacks.

Last month, dozens of terror suspects were killed in police operations in the area as they planned attacks on security agents.

For instance, at least two members of the al Shabaab terror group who had been acting as doctors for the group were killed in a raid by police in their camp in Fafi, Garissa County.

Police said the incident happened at a medical camp for the gang in the Hagarso area.

There are fears there are dozens of more of the terrorists hiding in the area, police said.

The multi-agency team recovered medical supplies and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) making materials, police said.

The team on the ground said the two slain al Shabaab 'doctors' have been treating militants injured by security agencies.

The raid is the latest in a series that has been targeting hideouts run by the terror group in the area.

The terrorists had earlier used a remote-controlled bomb to hit a police vehicle and killed at least four General Service Units in Dadaab, Garissa County.

The attack took place at Ege Dam along Dadaab-Garissa road when the officers were headed to provide security during the ongoing national exams.

It came days after multi-agency teams at the weekend destroyed a logistics base used by al Shabaab militants in Dahun in Fafi, Garissa county and recovered assorted foodstuffs.

The operation recovered rice, sugar and water.

The officers destroyed the food and continued to pursue the terrorists who were using the base.

Police said by the time the team arrived there the terrorists had escaped.

At least three al Shabaab militants were on October 17 killed in an ambush by police in Fafi, Garissa County and assorted food found on them.

They were transporting the food on donkey carts to a new makeshift when they were ambushed, police said.

The security team killed three militants while others escaped with serious injuries and recovered foodstuffs, water and a collapsible tank, said a police official aware of the operation.

The area is near the Kenya Somalia border which the terrorists usually breach.

This has forced the government to suspend the planned opening of the border.

The al Shabaab terrorists are behind the attacks.

A multi-agency teams have mounted operations in the areas near the Somali-Kenya border.

In October, two al-Shabaab militants were killed when a bomb they were setting up exploded on them in the Amuma area in the county.

Police said the two were placing the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the main supply route used by security agencies and other motorists when it exploded.

The area has suffered repeated attacks that have rendered it inhabitable.

This has forced the government to suspend a plan to reopen the border that was closed in 2011.

Al Shabaab militants are behind the attacks. They cross the porous border for attacks.
