Collaborate to address skills gap among graduates - varsities told

MKU vice chancellor says sharing strengths key to producing job-ready graduates

Higher institutions of learning have been urged to collaborate in areas of research in a move that could be critical in addressing the skills gaps in the country. 

Mount Kenya University vice chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said different institutions have different strengths and coming together could be essential in ensuring the higher education sector releases graduates who are job-ready.

Prof Jaganyi spoke during the second graduation ceremony for Equip Africa Institute, a middle-level training college affiliated with MKU. 

“We recognise the vital role that Equip Africa Institute plays in shaping the medical and technical landscape and we are committed to fostering a collaborative environment that promotes innovation research and industrial industry engagement,” he said.

Of the 224 students who graduated, 113 were awarded diplomas, 105 certificates and six artisan certificates.

They undertook their studies at the Kitale-based Equip Africa Institute as well as the different centres in Nakuru, Kisii, Thika, Mombasa and Malindi.

Your willingness to adapt to new technologies and innovative practices will undoubtedly contribute to closing the skills gap and driving sustainable economic growth,” Trans Nzoia education executive Stanley Kirui said.

“The road ahead may present its challenges, but with the skills and determination you have acquired, I'm confident that you will overcome them and emerge as leaders and competent innovators in your respective fields.”

“Embracing a spirit of innovation, curiosity, and creativity will enable you to contribute to the development of new technologies, processes, and solutions that can positively impact your industry and beyond,”  MKU principal campuses, coordination, and institutional compliance Dr Nahashon Mwirigi said.

“By engaging in research and staying abreast of the latest developments in your field, you will position yourself as a forward-thinker and a catalyst for positive change. Your willingness to explore new ideas, challenge existing norms, and seek innovative solutions will not only benefit your own career but will also contribute to the advancement of your industry.”

Equip Africa Institute, as with other Technical and Vocational Education Training institutions, has in the recent past been gaining popularity.

“Every experience and challenge you encounter, provides you an opportunity to grow, embrace change, stay curious, and never stop seeking knowledge,” Equip Africa Institute executive director Prof Evans Kerosi Somoni.
