Veteran Mugithi singer Dickson Munyonyi, is dead.

Munyonyi came to the limelight in 2021 with his three-decade-old song Firirinda.

Munyonyi died on Saturday morning while receiving treatment at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County, his family said.

He had been in hospital after being diagnosed with cancer.

He had also made appeals to well-wishers on social media, asking for financial support to offset his medical bills.

The musician's body was moved to the hospital's morgue, as his family began preparations for the legend's final sendoff.

The singer came to the limelight at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when his song Firirinda became a national anthem among many.

Firirinda was released 30 years ago.

The song became a sensation across social media platforms with youngsters even dancing to it.

The song catapulted Munyonyi to the limelight, attracting even the interest of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya Ezekiel Mutua.

Mutua said the board would take Munyonyi for physiotherapy to restore his voice chords.

He also then called for financial help to get Munyonyi to hospital for treatment.

His health condition forced him to quit aggressive live performances as he battled the disease, being on and off drugs.

Among others, Munyonyi performed at former president, Uhuru Kenyatta's wedding in 1989.
