Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi on Wednesday found himself on the receiving end of Kenyans on X, formerly Twitter, for claiming that Mama Mbogas can afford to pay for President William Ruto’s affordable houses with ease.

It followed an invitation by the government for Kenyans to purchase houses in the Bondeni area of Nakuru County at a monthly fee of Sh16,997 on a rent-to-own basis for a two-bedroom unit.

The Ministry of Lands and Housing said potential homeowners will first need to make a 10 per cent deposit of Sh315,000 for the 64 square metre house going for Sh3.2 million.

Ngunyi said the amount is well within the range that Mama Mbogas can afford and eventually own the houses.

His post came after Kenyans online lamented at the high prices of the houses and wondered if ordinary Kenyans who fall in the 'hustler' bracket would be in a position to afford them.

“Who told you ama mboga cannot afford 300K as 10% deposit for a Ruto House? The clever ones will borrow from 'Chama' and repay slowly,” he said on X.

“Who told you mama mboga cannot pay 16K a month to Ruto for the house? That is 500 bob a day or selling 4 mbogas a day every month. Wapi shida?” he posed.

Kenyans who responded to the statement disagreed with the former presidential political advisor saying his sentiments were unrealistic.

“Ni ngumu. Rudia hiyo hesabu yako tena (It’s hard. Repeat your calculations again),” @CaptainKipkori said.

“If it was this simple we couldn't be having such a huge slum and informal settlements in Kenya,” added @liriamurangiri

Some like @WisdomSeekerKe concurred with Ngunyi saying:

“The wise will be homeowners by 2032 when the program ends,” others like @hustler_kabwere said, “Your high-level thinking is out of touch with the reality on the ground”.

@jarrie_jerry differed with Ngyunyi’s assumption that four bundles of vegetables would fetch Sh500 per day to enable Mama Mbogas to pay for the affordable house.

“Eish!! Donge we need to be honest,” he said.

“Tembea ground ulize Mama Mboga, working on assumptions is wrong,” added @arthurnixon244.

“Your assumptions are wild ...it kinder don't live in Kenya,” said @kamaumanic.

The Ministry said it has set aside 380 two and three-bedroom units for sale with the latter going for Sh4.2 million at a monthly fee of Sh22,933.

Interested buyers were encouraged to visit the location and survey the available houses before commencing the application process on the Boma Yangu portal.
