Justice Fatuma Sichale elected appellate court JSC representative

She replaces Justice Mohammed Warsame who completed his second term.

Justice Fatuma Sichale has been elected by Court of Appeal judges as their representative to the Judicial Service Commission-JSC.

In a statement Friday evening, the Judiciary said Justice Sichale beat justices Patrick Kiage and Gatembu Kairu to emerge the winner.

She replaces Justice Mohammed Warsame who completed his second term.

Sichale will have been be vetted by the Justice and Legal Affairs committee of the National Assembly once President William Ruto forwards her name for consideration.

The committee will have 14 days within which to table its vetting report for either adoption or rejection.

The key functions of the JSC include recommending individuals to the President for appointment as judges.

The commission is also mandated to review and recommend the conditions of service of judges and judicial officers, other than their remuneration and the staff of the Judiciary.

Under Article Article 171(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, the Judicial Service Commission consists of the following 11 members.

They include the Chief Justice, who is also the President of the Commission; one Supreme Court judge elected by the judges of the Supreme Court and one Court of Appeal judge elected by the judges of the Court of Appeal.

Other members are one High Court judge and one magistrate, one a woman and one a man, elected by the members of the association of judges and magistrates.

The Attorney-General is the representative of the Executive, two advocates (one a woman and one a man) elected by members of the Law Society of Kenya and one person nominated by the Public Service Commission.

The general public is also represented by one woman and one man, not being lawyers, appointed by the President with the approval of the National Assembly.
