Kwale ODM members have criticised plans by the Kenya Kwanza to implement the housing projects in Kwale.

This comes as President William Ruto is expected to launch the affordable housing project in various parts of the region over the weekend.

The projects are set to be implemented at the White House in Diani and Mabokoni villages in Gombato-Bongwe wards in Msambweni subcounty.

Kwale ODM chairman Hassan Mwanyoha said the project will benefit only a few individuals.

He accused Ruto of violating the rights of the people whose land the project will be implemented.

"Both parcels of lands that have been identified for the implementation of the project are community lands set aside for specific purposes; White House was to serve as a market centre while the land in Mabokoni was a grazing area for cattle farmers in Mabokoni," Mwanyoha said.

He said the county did not conduct public participation, before turning the land for other development.

Mwanyoha said the affected residents will not benefit from the housing projects.

He demanded an audit of the leased land in Kwale and its report made public.

He said most of the leases have expired but dishonest state officials are planning to grab them.

Some of the expired land leases as claimed by Mwanyoha are Mwereni ranches.

He urged the national government to revoke all title deeds of private developers claiming ownership of huge parcels of land in Kaya forest.

Mwanyoha said land-grabbing has deprived Coast people of their rights to practice and preserve their cultures.

The politicians wants the construction of the Kwale-Kinango road fast tracked.

He said the stalled construction has slowed the area's socio-economic development.

"Two years after Kenya Kwanza government has been in power, no progress has been made. We just hear excuses. We therefore demand the disbursement of the funds for the construction of the Kwale-Kinango road. We are tired of tokenism," Mwanyoha said.

ODM coordinator Omar Boga criticised the demolition of houses to pave way for the affordable housing project.

"How will these people live because many are retirees and depending on unstable tourism activities?" he asked.

Boga said land injustices have gained roots across the county urging the national government to ensure the locals' lands are returned.

He said the government should give the progress of the feasibility studies of Mrima Hill in the Lunga-Lunga subcounty for the mining of niobium.

He said Mrima Hill is a sacred forest and is also a biodiversity hotspot.

Boga said the government should compensate community members and employees of the Base Titanium factory which is closing down.

The politicians also wants affected communities to be involved the management and usage of the rehabilitated and restored land.

Jenifer Mwakambi decried the increased incidences of Human-Wildlife conflicts in Kwale, especially in Kinango and Lunga-Lunga sub-counties.

She said the national government through KWS should compensate the affected victims and their families, failure to which ODM will move to court and sue the government and pursue justice for the bereaved families.
