Police have recovered a police G3 rifle that went missing from Kiaruyu Police Post in Mathira East, Nyeri County in September last year.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Mohamed Amin said the firearm was recovered at a suspect's house within Ndunyuruma village of Rwarela-Buuri East in Meru County by a team of DCI Operations detectives backed up by their counterparts from Mugae Police Post.

“A male suspect believed to be part of a gang that has since been placed in custody in connection with the theft of another police firearm (AK47) got wind of the police presence in the area and escaped, leaving behind the rifle in the hands of his 30-year-old wife,” Amin said.

He said another suspect aged 40 was arrested as a person of interest in the case and he is being interrogated to determine his relations with the escapee.

During the recovery of the AK47 rifle on Monday, a 25-year-old male suspect was arrested in connection with the theft of the police firearm from Kabonge police station.

The suspect who hails from the Mugure area of Ndia was ambushed by detectives who were acting on an intelligence report.

Amin said in a statement a G3 rifle that was stolen alongside the AK47 was yet to be recovered.

Two police officers from whom the guns were stolen are currently under investigation.

The guns reportedly went missing after the cell sentry and report office attendant stepped out of their areas of deployment, leaving the firearms unattended at the reception area.
