X owner Elon Musk has taken a jibe at rival social media giant Meta after Facebook and Instagram sites went down Tuesday evening.

Facebook users were logged out and attempts to log back onto the platform were met with error messages.

Instagram on the other hand had frozen feeds that could not refresh while the comment section was unresponsive.

Messages could not go through.

Users took to X, formerly Twitter, to air their frustrating experiences with majority saying they believed their accounts had been hacked.

Musk said, "If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working" in an apparent ridicule of his rival's servers.

Meta said on X via its Communications Director Andy Stone that it was working to resolve the hiccup.

"We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now," he said.

The sites resumed normal operation some minutes past 7pm local time.

Guinness World Records said the traffic of users who trooped to X during the downtime was so huge it was a probable new record.

"New record for most people on X at once soon to be looked at by our team," it said on X.
