President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has opened applications for crucial leadership positions in the 210 wards in five specific counties.

In a statement, the party said the application is to all elected polling centre officials including elected or nominated ward representatives.

Those eligible, it said, have until May 15 to submit their applications.

It has also emphasized that elected or nominated MCAs must actively contest for the ward positions, reinforcing a merit-based approach within the party's structure.

“Note that elected or nominated MCAs must contest for the ward positions and are not automatic officials,” the statement signed by the National Elections Board (NEB) chairperson Anthony Mwaura reads.

The election in these five counties of Nairobi, Narok, West Pokot, Homabay and Busia has been planned for May 18.

Application procedures are streamlined through the party’s registration portal.

“Details on specific venues per ward will be communicated in due course,” the statement further states.

The positions up for grabs encompass a diverse spectrum of roles including Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson (each of opposite gender), Secretary and Deputy Secretary (each of opposite gender), treasurer and organizing Secretary.

A representative of Youth, Women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), MSMEs, farmers, religious groups, professionals and seven additional members (with at least three of the opposite gender).

Mwaura has encouraged all party members to participate in the elections noting their active involvement is crucial in shaping the future of the party and ensuring effective leadership at the ward level.

The elections are being conducted following the conclusion of the grassroots elections under the first phase.

In Nairobi, the party has 853,000 registered members, Homa Bay (141,000), Narok (233,000), Busia (141,000) and West Pokot has 208,000.

The elections were conducted electronically.

"Our election is going to be electronic. This is the first in the country, the first in Africa. There is no party in Africa which has done electronic voting. It is going to be seamless, free and fair," Mwaura said.
