Four casualties have been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital after a building undergoing demolition collapsed in Mathare North Area 2.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, three individuals had critical injuries while one person sustained minor injuries.

"Search and rescue operations are ongoing," Kenya Red Cross said on X.

Earlier on, the Red Cross said there were fears that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble and a rescue team had been dispatched.

The incident comes barely a week after a five-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Mountain View Ward.

Photos and videos seen by the Star showed the building was leaning on one side.

A witness said people were inside their respective houses when the building collapsed.

She claimed the landlord was doing expansion works and ongoing heavy rains may have compromised the structural integrity of the foundation soils leading to the collapse.

She said the first floor of the building was most affected.

Cars that were in the parking lot were damaged, she added.

Red Cross said 10 people with minor injuries were rescued and attended to at the scene by its Action Team.

On May 11, another building collapsed in Kanduyi, Bungoma.

Two people were rescued and rushed to hospital for immediate medication.
