President William Ruto has affirmed that the government will buy land to settle Mai Mahiu flood victims by the end of June.

The President said the government is already looking for land to purchase for the victims and in the coming days that will be completed.

Ruto who spoke during the National Akorino Conference in Nakuru on Sunday said he needed to clear the air about the purchase of the land.

"I believe that by the end of June, the land will be available so that we see how to settle them because they cannot go back there as that area can slide again,'' Ruto said.

The President's remarks come in the wake of complaints from the victims that they have been ignored by the government.

Ruto said he had heard the concerns and that the Kenyan government is on course to acquire the land as promised.

"When we had that tragedy, I sent my deputy when we had a funeral because I had more than 2o heads of state who came to Kenya,'' he said.

" I accepted that we shall find land and build them new houses, I also want to say it myself so that it is known that it is the position of the Kenyan government,'' he said.

The Mai Mahiu tragic incident claimed the lives of 61 individuals while some are still missing.

During the funeral on May 9, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that the government had allocated Sh300 million for house construction for the Mai Mahiu flood victims.
