The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission says it’s investigating alleged loss of over Sh1.2 billion in Garissa county facilitated through conflict of interest by eight senior county officials.

EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said in a statement Wednesday that an investigative operation conducted on Tuesday, June 11, revealed that the officials are alleged to be directly and indirectly trading with the county government through companies owned by themselves, close family members and associates.

“The operation, which is part of the ongoing investigation, was undertaken pursuant to court orders targeting senior officials of the county government, their proxies and companies associated with them,” Ngumbi said.

He said Tuesday's operation yielded valuable evidence that will be used to support the ongoing investigations.

Ngumbi said the outcome of the probe will inform the next course of action including prosecution of suspects and recovery of any lost funds, if any.

He asked Garissa residents who may have evidence that may assist investigations to submit such information through the anonymous reporting system in the EACC website www.eacc.go.ke.

Ngumbi said the information can also be relayed via toll-free number 1551 or by reporting to any of the EACC offices across the country.

“Any information received will be treated in confidence and only be used to further the investigation,” the spokesman said.
