The Sh250 million fraud and extortion case against former Sports CS Rashid Echesa and his co-accused Joseph Waswa is set for directions at the Kibera chief magistrate's court today.

Echesa and Waswa were in April charged with conspiracy to defraud Sh250 million.

The extortion is alleged to have been targeted at Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

The duo also faced charges of falsely accusing the governor of kidnapping the former CS and demanding cash to drop the false accusations.

They denied the counts and were granted Sh500000 bail each.

The matter is today coming up before Kibera chief magistrate Anne Mwangi where Lang'ata DCIO and the investigating officer are expected to explain to the court the status of investigations and to readiness of witnesses.

Elsewhere, a director at the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is expected in court today following his arrest Sunday on claims of aiding the extortion of foreigners in the said office.

In a statement, on Sunday evening, the office of the Prime CS confirmed the arrested those nabbed had been aiding fraudsters who are said to have been conning foreigners.

"Those arrested had perfected "renting" office space to alleged criminals by either vacating their offices for the alleged fraudsters' use or deceptively misrepresenting themselves," the statement said.

At the Makadara law courts, operations are expected to start today after a nearly two-week closure following the fatal shooting of magistrate Monica Kivuti.

Kivuti was over the weekend buried at her home in Yatta, Machakos County.

In a statement issued Sunday, Chief Justice Martha Koome said judicial officers, court staff and all stakeholders working at the Makadara Law Court will undergo trauma counselling between Monday and Wednesday following the incident.

On Thursday, the station's court users committee will meet to discuss modalities of resuming operations and the immediate security measures to be put in place.

"On Friday, the court shall reorganise diaries to assign new dates and implement the recommendations of the CUC on the modalities of resuming court operations," the CJ said.

She said plea-taking shall resume on July 1 in only secured and fit-for-purpose courtrooms.
