Gachagua holds bilateral talks with Chinese Ambassador Pingjian

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday held talks with the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Zhou Pingjian at his Karen residence.

Pingjian had paid a courtesy call to Gachagua ahead of the latter's visit to China.

They discussed issues to do with agroproduce, more so coffee, tea, and avocado.

Gachagua has been at the forefront of coffee reforms in the country, affirming that the intervention in the subsector is there to rescue it from collapsing after sustained low production over the years.

"We discussed cross-cutting priority areas of common interests between the two nations, including enhancing trade and investment, among others," Gachagua said. 

He noted that Kenya and China enjoy cordial and fraternal relations based on mutual trust and benefit, especially in trade and development.

The two countries established relations in 1963, suspended ties temporarily in 1967, but ultimately re-established diplomatic relations in 1978.

Since then, they have significantly expanded their economic and investment agreements, such that China is currently Kenya's largest trading partner.

While the robust trade, investment, and Chinese-led infrastructure projects have benefitted Kenya's overall development.
