At least four people were Wednesday evening killed in a road accident along the Iten-Eldoret highway in the Moiben area, Uasin Gishu County.

Police said eight others were seriously injured and were admitted to hospitals with multiple injuries.

The accident happened at Chembulet Bridge and involved a matatu that was headed for Eldoret town at about 5 pm.

Survivors and police said the vehicle had a tyre burst which saw the driver lose its control.

It then veered off the road and rolled into a ditch killing the victims on the spot.

According to police, the victims included two male and two female adults.

The injured were rescued and rushed to Iten County Hospital.

Police who visited the scene said they are investigating the accident and will take necessary action.

The officers urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition.

“Among others, always ensure your tyres are in good condition for the safety of all,” said police spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango.

She said some of the accidents being experienced are unavoidable and urged for caution from motorists at large.

The bodies were preserved in the same hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise at an alarming rate amid calls to address the trend.

Police statistics show up to 30 people have been killed in the past week in separate accidents.

Up to 4,000 people are killed annually in separate accidents. There is a campaign to address the menace.

Many others are left with injuries in the incidents that hurt families. This is because taking care of the injured needs heavy finances.

The National Transport and Safety Authority says the leading causes of fatal crashes included hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and vehicles and motorcycles losing control.

Also overtaking improperly and failing to keep the proper lane resulting in head-on collisions are mentioned as causes.

Police and other agencies are engaged in a campaign to address the menace.
