Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka are among leaders who have joined President William Ruto as he assents to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Bill.

The ceremony was held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), a move from the previous assents which have been done at State House.

The Bill is one of the key implementations that are a result of the National Dialogue Committee talks.

Also present were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Attorney General Justin Muturi among other senior state officers.

From the Opposition, National Assembly minority leader Opiyo Wandayi, ODM deputy party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya were also present.

On Monday, President Ruto invited leaders from all sides of the political divide, and from within and outside parliament to join him in the event.

"As the first bill successfully processed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, President William Ruto invites leaders of parliamentary parties, both inside and outside Parliament, to join him for this historic event," Ruto's spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said.

The new law will put the country’s electoral management system in place, including paving way for the appointment of new IEBC commissioners.

The President has been under pressure to sign the IEBC Bill amid calls by a section of Kenyans to recall their MPs for voting in favour of the impugned Finance Bill, 2024.

Opposition leaders and a section of the clergy have been calling for the signing of the Bill to facilitate the reconstitution of the electoral agency.
