Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has appealed for calm as detectives work to unearth more evidence in the macabre killings of women whose remains were found in a dumpsite within Mukuru kwa Njenga slums.

Kanja spoke as DCI detectives unmasked the key suspect in the murders, a 33-year-old man who confessed to having killed 42 women, including his wife, between 2022 and July 11, 2024.

The discovery of the dismembered remains of the victims has caused public outrage as detectives pursue what they now believe were the actions of a serial killer.

In his address to the country at DCI Headquarters on Kiambu Road, Kanja said officers are working tirelessly to conclude investigations.

He appealed to family members who may have lost their loved ones to come forward with information that may assist the probe.

“We thank members of the public who continue to assist us in the search process and continue to appeal to the public to remain calm and give officers space handling the scene,” he said.

“Anybody who may have a missing relative during the period the killings occurred, come forward to the DCI headquarters or any police station. We are working collaboratively, we count on you members of the fourth estate and everybody else to help us unravel the genesis of this act.”

DCI boss Mohamed Amin said the key suspect was arrested early Monday outside a club in Kayole at around 3 am.

He said the suspect had gone to watch the Euro 2024 final match between Spain and England when he was apprehended by officers from the DCI Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and Operations directorate.

“We posited several theories that we are looking at but from the look of things, it is crystallising that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life,” Amin said.

The DCI boss said the suspect confessed to strangling the victims to death, dismembering their bodies, and stuffing them in nylon bags before dumping them in the dumpsite, some 100 meters away from his rented one-room house.

“As we were apprehending him this morning, he was in the process of luring another victim. As investigations progress, we shall be able to get hold of the victim,” Amin said.
