Kakamega youth engage police in hide and seek during protests

Youth in Kakamega town engaged police in running battles the whole day during anti-government protests on Tuesday.

Protesting youth lit bonfires and barricaded roads within the town.

Police fired teargas canisters at the youth who engaged the officers in a hide-and-seek game.

A wines and spirits shop and a filling station were allegedly looted during the demos, and gas cylinders carted away.

Police guarded the main gate to the Kakamega County headquarters where the protesters had planned to enter and occupy.

The youth had earlier confronted, disarmed and beat up a group that had claimed to have been deployed by the business community.

The Gen Z Kakamega chapter issued demands they want met by Governor Fernandes Barasa.

These include disbanding the entire county executive committee and reconstituting a new and much leaner executive team based on meritocracy devoid of those who lost in the 2022 General Elections.

They also want Barasa to seal corruption loopholes and remove all unnecessary staff, including advisors in both his office and his deputy.

The youth also want the governor to pay all pending bills and disband the office of the first lady.

They also want to all staff who do not meet the required qualifications for the positions they hold sacked.
