HASSAN NAADO: MPs must rise to occasion in vetting nominees

The reawakening of young population that led to street protests should not be in vain.

In Summary
  • On bringing people who are facing cases in court, the challenge in our country is the nature of our politics.
  • Politicians are different categories of human beings in our country such that sometimes we let them get away with murder.

I just want Parliament, especially members of the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, to be patriotic and true to the Kenyan people.

The reawakening of the young population that led to street protests, where lives were lost and properties worth millions destroyed, should not be  in vain.

I want to remind myself and those in authority that the shedding of blood and sacrifices made by young people should not be in vain, but should, actually, be reflected in the wishes of the majority.

It is good to have a national outlook in the Cabinet and, generally, in governance structures because every Kenyan has a stake in the Republic of Kenya.

But that cannot be used to betray the core principles of governance and transparency and, more importantly, the history of persons who have been nominated.

In religion, especially in Islam, we normally say that one should never give up or lose hope in the mercy of God.

Some people may, actually, become better after being not very good before, but I think that because Kenya is not short of talent, at least let Parliament play its role.

About bringing people who are facing cases in court, the challenge in our country is the nature of our politics.

Politicians are different categories of human beings in our country such that sometimes we let them get away with murder.

This is what we may find ourselves in, because there are attempts to create what is now being called a broad-based Cabinet,  but in the real sense it is a coalition government.

Every other coalition has the best amongst their ranks and there is no shortage of people in the political parties.

I, again, insist that our hopes are in the hands of the MPs in the National Assembly.

I can only say let them do their part with loads of patriotism.
