The Kenya Wildlife Service has dismissed as false claims on social media of ongoing mining activities inside the Tsavo East National Park.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, KWS said the claims of the activities circulating on social media are not from the park.

The agency said no mining activities take place at the Tsavo East National Park.

"We wish to clarify that the images being shared online are not from the said Tsavo East National Park and that there are no mining activities taking place there," KWS said in the statement.

The images circulated online showed wide canals created on the ground, suggesting there was mining in that particular location.

But KWS said the shared images were not from Tsavo East National Park but instead from the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project located in the Galana ranch that is managed by the Agricultural Development Corporation.

The ranch is adjacent to the Tsavo East National Park.

The food security project is being spearheaded by the State Department of Irrigation and is aimed at enhancing food security in Kenya through large-scale irrigation and sustainable farming practices.

"As part of the program, canals are being constructed to facilitate water flow into irrigation farms," KWS said.

The agency said it remains committed to the conservation and protection of national parks and wildlife heritage.
