Hamilton Orata named Homa Bay county acting ODM chair

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has announced Hamilton Orata as the county's chairperson.

This follows Gladys Wanga's appointment as the Orange Party national chairperson.

Orata deputised Wanga as the Homa Bay county chairperson.

"On August 9, 2024, the Central Committee made changes in the National Executive Committee, where H.E Gladys Wanga was named the National Chairperson of the ODM party. Hitherto, Governor Wanga was the Chairperson of the Homa Bay County Coordinating Committee.

"Under Articles 15 and 50 of the ODM Party Constitution, Governor Wanga vacates the position of County Chairperson, and Vice-chairperson H.E Hamilton Orata takes over in an acting capacity until elections are held," the party's Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen said in a letter.

The clarification came after a letter, which the party flagged as fake, circulated online claiming that the party had appointed Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Osogo alias Bensouda as the acting chairperson following Wanga's exit from the position.

Governor Wanga moved to become national chairperson taking over from John Mbadi who was appointed to President William Ruto's cabinet as Treasury CS.

In other changes made by the party, Governors Simba Arati (Kisii), Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa) and Senator Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga) were named deputy party leaders.

This follows former Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Wycliffe Oparanya's (Kakamega) appointments to Cabinet. The two were deputy party leaders before their appointment.

Opiyo Wandayi who was the National Assembly Minority leader also joined Cabinet.
