Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has pleaded not guilty to all three charges levelled against her by the Meru County Assembly.

Speaking after the accusations were read to her ahead of hearing the impeachment case, Mwangaza insisted she is not guilty to charges.

"Not guilty," she said.

This is the third time Mwangaza is being tried for impeachment.

She has been saved by the Senate twice, in 2022 and 2023.

Mwangaza's first impeachment went the committee way while the second was heard by a plenary.

Her fate now lies in the Senate plenary that will hear her case.

Kawira faces three broad charges; gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

She is being represented by lawyers Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma as lead as well as Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga and Collins Mwenda.

The assembly this time is banking on the services of Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as the lead counsel.

Njiru will lead a legal team comprising Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Antony Mwenda, Ngure Benson Kinyua, Baptista Muriuki Kanyaru and Linda Nkirote Kithinji.

The sponsor of the impeachment Zipporah Kinyua will appear in person accompanied by MCA Aurelio Murangiri Kiramana.

The advocates of the County Assembly will be the first to state their case against Mwangaza on the floor of the Senate.

Last week, senators resolved that Mwangaza would face the whole 67 senators to fight for her survival.

They rejected a motion by the House Business Committee that proposed the impeachment motion against Mwangaza be probed by a team of 11 senators.

In the defeated motion last Wednesday, the 11 members would have included Senators Hillary Sigei, Abdul Haji, Wahome Wamainga, David Wafula, Gloria Orwoba, Karen Nyamu and Issa Juma.

Others are Eddy Oketch, Shakilla Abdalla, Betty Montet and Beatrice Akinyi.

The majority argued that the plenary route would serve justice to both Mwangaza and the MCAs.
