The opposition party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has expressed confidence in ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of his African Union Commission chairperson bid launch.

The Government of Kenya is set to unveil Raila as its candidate for AUC chairperson at State House, Nairobi.

"From Kenya to Africa… We are proud of you Sir," the party said on X.

Raila is seeking to replace Moussa Faki of Chad, whose term comes to an end early next year.

Raila is facing competition from Djibouti's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Youssouf, Anil Gayan (Mauritius) and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar).

President William Ruto is set to officially unveil his candidacy for the post in the ceremony that will be graced by at least five African presidents who are already in the country.

The presidents are from all countries within the East African Community.

The EAC has eight member countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.

Cabinet Secretaries and several ODM leaders are also in attendance.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is also in Kenya and is expected to attend the unveiling.

He is among the people touting for Raila to take up the role.

Foreign affairs PS Korir Singo'ei said the government had presented the requisite documentation of Kenya's nominee for the Chairmanship to the Dean of Eastern Region.

"Under the authority of the Government of Kenya and as per the Statutes and Rules of the African Union Commission, we have today formally submitted requisite documentation of Kenya's nominee for the Chairmanship of AfricanUnion, H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, to the Dean of Eastern Region, H.E. Dharmraj Busgeeth, Ambassador of Mauritius," Singo'ei said.

Present during the submission of the bid was Raila's close ally and lawyer Makau Mutua and Kenya's ambassador to Addis Ababa George Orina, among other officials.
