Africa Union Commission chairperson candidate Raila Odinga has said there is a need to green the continent.

Speaking on Tuesday at the State House during his unveiling as an AUC candidate, he pointed out that the continent is home to the second-largest carbon sink in the world.

A carbon sink absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon sinks include oceans, forests, soil and rocks.

"Africa is home to the second largest carbon sink in the world - The Congo Forest," he said.

Raila also said there is a need to arrest desertification and the advance of the Sahara Desert, adding that Africa can deal with the issues effectively.

This, he said, will be possible if Africa has an effective organisation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Additionally, Raila stated that Africa should arrest the need for young Africans to move to other continents trying to look for "greener pastures".

"We should ensure that we create a conducive environment within the continent here so these youth do not have to fee to go to Europe and this only works if Africa works together as a united continent," he said.
