A police officer was on Thursday arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring a tuk-tuk driver, who he claimed was attempting to kidnap him.

Police said Nathan Bett, who was deployed as a court orderly, allegedly shot 28-year-old Derick Chibini twice in the confrontation along Kakamega - Kisumu Road.

The incident was investigated after Nehemiah Kiprono, the police officer in-charge of Kakamega Police Station armory, on Wednesday reported that Bett had returned his pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.

Following an inquiry, it was established that Bett had discharged two rounds of 9mm ammunition during the scuffle between him and the tuk-tuk driver.

Police said Bett alleged that the tuk-tuk driver declined to stop to allow him to alight at Kakamega Police Station gate.

This is said to have led to suspicion of intention of kidnapping and the shooting.

Police said Chibini sustained two gunshot injuries on the left shoulder and another one penetrating the right collarbone and exiting on the left collarbone.

Chibini was first rushed to Mukumu dispensary and later referred to Oasis Multispecialty Hospital in Kakamega where he is admitted in fair condition.

Police said Bett is in custody for attempted murder, adding that action will be taken against Kiprono for issuing a ceska pistol to a member of other ranks.
