Detectives have recovered firearms and ammunition from suspected bandits in West Pokot County.

The multi-agency team led by GSU Turkwel Camp in West Pokot County recovered two AK47 rifles, two magazines, and three rounds of ammunition.

According to police, two suspected bandits were later arrested by the multi-agency team at Turkwel shopping Centre.

The arrest comes after a study by the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) highlighted West Pokot as one of the leading counties in livestock rustling and banditry in the country.

The study further said 300 people have been killed since 2023, adding that there was increased use of terrorism-like violence and militarisation and the vitalisation of modern weaponry during such raids.

According to the study by NCRC, other unique aspects of banditry,  are the displacement of huge populations, the use of vehicles and bodaboda in the transportation of stolen livestock and the change from an ‘organised cultural sport’ to an ‘organised crime’.

“The National Police Service appreciates members of the public for their continued cooperation and support” NPS said on x.
