President William Ruto has described sporting activities as a major uniting event for Kenyan citizens.

Speaking when he flagged off the Junior Starlets who are heading to Spain for their pre-World Cup tour, Ruto said Kenyans ought to support the team.

"Sports is one thing that brings our nation together and unites us. This is our moment as Kenyans for us to close ranks and support this team," he said.

Ruto said the Kenyan talent is the greatest asset that the country has.

He said he is proud to be part of the group sending the Junior Starlets to the first World Cup.

"I am very happy with the collaboration that has been seen with different actors, especially the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Sports that this girl will have a chance to make this historic journey to participate in the first World Cup without missing the opportunity to do their exams," he said.

The President said that he had decided that the sports fund would no longer be used for other activities other than what it was intended for.

"It will only be focused on sports so that we can have adequate resources to support sports from the bottom,"  he said.

The 23-member squad are scheduled to leave the country on Thursday, September 19, and will spend 11 days in a training camp before heading to the Dominican Republic for the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup.

The team will be accompanied by eight officials as they prepare for the highly anticipated tournament.

During the flagging off, at the State House, officials including Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen, PS Peter Tum and FKF President Nick Mwendwa were present.
