At least eight people sustained serious injuries after a fire broke out in Kawangare on Thursday night.

The fire broke out at around 7:30 pm, burning about 160 houses and forcing residents to seek alternative shelters.

Confirming the incident, Kenya Red Cross said the fire was successfully contained with the support of residents.

"Unfortunately, 160 homes have been completely destroyed. The Kenya Red Cross has attended to eight casualties," the humanitarian group said.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be established.

This comes days after three people were Monday night killed in a fire incident in Lunga Lunga slums, Nairobi.

Police and locals said the fire that broke out at about 8 pm flattened a house where the victims were.

The deceased were burned beyond recognition.

Police said the fire broke out from the affected structures before it spread fast killing the three.

The victims were sleeping when the fire broke out.

They were identified by their mother as a 16-year-old form two student at a local school, an eight-year-old girl at Joyland Vision Academy who was in grade two and their sister aged four.

Police said the fire broke out in Lunga Lunga at Paradise slums.

The bodies were moved to the City Mortuary.
