Police in Kakamega have apprehended a middle-aged man accused of cultivating over 400 bhang stems on his farm in Likuyani subcounty.

The man was arrested at Marakaru village following an operation led by area assistant chief Moses Shiundu and Mawe Tatu police post officers.

According to Shiundu, a public tip-off led to a raid on the suspect's farm, where they discovered the illegal plant being grown.

“Without hesitation, I alerted the police officers and together we made a raid to the suspect’s homestead who led us to the farm, which is about an eighth of an acre, where we managed to uproot over 400 stems of the illegal plant,” he said

The bhang was taken to Mawe Tatu police post, and the suspect is in custody, awaiting court proceedings for cultivating an illegal plant.

Shiundu urged residents in the sub-location, especially the youth, to stop engaging in criminal activities to safeguard their lives.

“Avoid unlawful activities like cultivating illegal plants like bhang, as many youths who engage in drug abuse lose direction and end up serving long jail terms,” he advised.

He encouraged youths to engage in productive activities and form groups to access government-provided interest-free loans.
