Prison warders at Kingongo Prison in Nyeri fatally shot a man they say intruded into the compound and attempted to break into a house.
According to officials, the man was shot in the thigh during the Thursday, November 27, dawn incident and taken to hospital, where he later died.
Authorities said the body has been moved to the mortuary pending identification and a postmortem examination.
Police noted the man was suspected to have been attempting a break-in, though investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.
In a separate matter, a body that had been wrongly identified and buried at a home in Masaba, Kisii County, was exhumed after the woman believed to have died in a road accident resurfaced.
Officials obtained a court order for the exhumation after it emerged that the remains buried in February were not those of the woman earlier reported to have died in a crash.
According to authorities, the family received a wrong body from a local mortuary due to what officials described as a mix-up.
The woman returned nine months later and visited her parents in Goti Nyango village, surprising residents and family members who had believed she was dead.
The family reported the matter to authorities, prompting police to oversee the exhumation on November 26.
The remains were moved to a mortuary for further procedures as villagers watched from a distance.
Police said a team is investigating the identity of the wrongly buried body.
