
A survey of 2,687 women aged 18-30 by Mwelekeo Insights revealed shifting perspectives on marriage among young women in Nairobi.
Over half (53 per cent) prefer not to get married, while 50 per cent feel societal pressure to do so.
Freedom is a major concern, with 60 per cent believing marriage limits personal independence.
Many (45 per cent) prefer to marry between 28-30, while 37 per cent are comfortable marrying beyond 30.
Financial and professional stability are key, with 80 per cent valuing career and economic support in marriage.
Interestingly, 51 per cent have no issue with polygamous unions, and 53% say religious beliefs shape their views.
Highly educated, employed women (67 per cent) are more likely to deprioritize marriage.
