ODM party secretary general Edwin Sifuna has called on the Kenya Kwanza government to honour their promise of bringing the price of maize flour to Sh70.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Sifuna said President William Ruto had said he would lower the price of maize flour to Sh70 as soon as he puts down the Bible after being sworn in.

"This Sh70 for unga did not come from me. It was a promise pronounced by William Ruto. It was he who said it. It was a Kenya Kwanza promise," Sifuna said on Thursday.

The ODM SG said when the Azimio team questioned how they were going to achieve this, Kenya Kwanza said they would stop subsidising consumption and start subsidising production.

He faulted the move saying it has brought the troubles Kenya is in now.

He said the Kenya Kwanza government also moved to import fertilisers from Russia to ease the cost of food in the country.

"That was the fertiliser they said was going to bring down the cost of food. When the farmers harvested the maize, they started threatening them to sell the maize at a certain price or they would import GMO," Sifuna said.

"We have told them, to return the subsidy. As you do your other plans for us to be able to realise economic relief, can people eat today? We are saying we are hungry now, you can't come and tell us to give us another three months, six months."

The Nairobi senator said the problem is that the Kenya Kwanza government keeps on moving the target for economic relief.

He said the government ought to tell Kenyans with certainty when the cost of living will be reduced.

Sifuna clarified that the Azimio coalition is not seeking to be part of the government through the handshake.
