The Kenyan government is set to establish a national registry to enrol potential donors and recipients in a bid to increase the number of organ donors and raise awareness about the significance of organ donation.

Speaking on Tuesday during the World Transplant Day celebrations at Kenyata National Hospital, the Acting Director of Health Care Services at the Ministry of Health Zeinab Gura, stated that the move will address the existing disparity between the availability and requirement of organs in the country.

She added that the registry will strive to ensure transparency, accountability and champion the equitable distribution of organs for transplant.

Gura additionally reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the field of organ donation and transplantation.

“We are partnering with various stakeholders to establish robust systems for organ retrieval, preservation, banking and transplantation,” Gura stated.

She went on and urged medical practitioners to remain vigilant and ensure the highest ethical standards in their practices stressing the need to put forward the lives of donors and recipients.

“I call upon all medical professionals both local and foreign involved in organ donation and transplantation to embrace the principles of transparency, informed consent and equity,” she added.

She was speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary for Medical services Harry Kimani at the event.

The event was organized by the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority in collaboration with the Kenyatta National Hospital under the theme, “Hope for Tomorrow: Transforming Lives through Organ Donation”.
