The Senate will hold a special sitting on June 26, to consider the tabling of embattled Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol.
In a gazette notice dated June 22, Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi said the sitting will be held at 2:30 pm.
"Pursuant to standing order 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Monday, June 26, 2023, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate,” reads the notice.
Normally the Senate sits three times in a week; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Kingi said the business to be transacted at the sitting shall be the consideration of the Report of the Special Committee on the Proposed Removal from Office, by impeachment, of Siaya’s DG.
Oduol's impeachment hearing kicked off at the Senate on Wednesday.
He presented before the 11-member ad-hoc committee conducting the hearings.
The committee is chaired by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang.
The DG had a team of three lawyers Paul Nyamodi, Moses Chelanga and Patrick Baraza.
The county assembly was represented by Gordon Ogola, Willis Otieno and Peter Wanyama.
Oduol was impeached after 42 MCAs unanimously adopted the report of the special committee that was established to investigate the grounds for which a motion of impeachment was tabled against him on May 29.
The impeachment motion was moved by East Asembo Ward MCA Gordon Onguru who accused the DG of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and misuse of public resources among other claims.
Oduol's hopes of remaining in office now lie with the committee which will make its verdict after the conclusion of the hearings.
If the committee finds the allegations substantiated, he (Oduol) will make history as the first deputy governor to be ousted from office.
The decision by the committee will set a precedence on disputes between the wrangling governors and their deputies.
